entities in the 50s

I. the AIFR

AIFR, short for the American Institute of Family Relations, is not really a well-documented entity in the history of the United States. Little information is available on this institute on the internet. However, we do know that its founder is Paul Popenoe (see image above) and it is an institute dedicated to advising troubled households. The advising and counseling process is illustrated through an example in Chapter 5 of this book by Alexandra Minna Stern (the example is summarized at the end). At the end of the situation assessment sessions, the counselor will provide pamphlets for the troubled couples seeking help.

For more detail on these pamphlets and the assessment sessions, see below.

II. the T-JTA

The T-JTA, or JTA as referred by Eugenic Nationstands for Talor-Johnson Temperament Assessment test. This is a test administered by Popenoe's AIFR in order to turn personality traits into actual data that can be analyzed and graphed, called psychometrics. Combining these numbers with the testimonies given by help-seekers, the counselor at AIFR shall draw a conclusion and possible remedy for the couple's tensioned situations.

Such remedy is highly likely reading curated pamphlets that aim to alter the woman's behaviors rather than the man's.

Section Summary

There exist Mr. and Mrs. C and this mom-and-dad couple is having some adult issues that might end up in divorce. Dad moves his fam to Southern California from Indianapolis, mom has a lovestruck with a co-worker. Not wanting things to go more south than S.C., they visit an AIFR clinic for marriage counseling.

They both give their testimony and take the T-JTA test. Basically, mom is diagnosed with 'masculine protest' i.e., lack the willingness to do chores and play the classic role of a homemaker, while dad is only highlighted as 'exaggerated aggressiveness'.

In the end, mom needs to change, so the counselor gives her two pamphlets (see images above).
